The Early Bride Gets the Best Bridal Shoes

Don’t forget to buy your bridal shoes right after you purchase the dress

Oftentimes, when brides think of their wedding day outfit, all they think about is the dress.  Countless hours are spent canvassing wedding magazines and bridal stores for the perfect wedding dress.  Advertisers also focus a lot of time on this, and the end result is that the bride ends up with a great dress, but without wedding shoes.  This isn’t a problem until it comes to alterations and standing on your feet all day.

Since wedding dresses need to be altered 6-9 months ahead of time, having the bridal shoes beforehand is more important than the bride may think.  Without the shoes, the bride is left to go searching for a bridal shoe that will match her dress.  The biggest problem here is that shoes come in different heel heights and without knowing what the heel height will be, the dress alteration is an estimate.   This happened to me during my wedding planning.  I spent a month searching for the perfect dress.  I didn’t know what I wanted so this made the search even more difficult and my estimate on timing was a bit delayed.  Then, after I purchased the dress, I assumed I was done with the outfit.  I didn’t think about it again until the dress came.  When the dress came and I was fitted for alterations, I completely forgot that I needed to have my bridal shoes in order to make sure the hem length was correct.  Therefore, we used different shoes under the assumption that I would quickly and easily find bridal shoes.  Little did I know that this would be such an ordeal.

Since I’m a petite woman and my husband was a bit taller, I chose higher heels for my alterations.  Unfortunately, the heels I chose were 3.5 inches.  Little did I know how hard it would be to find bridal shoes that were exactly 3.5 inches.  I looked everywhere – in stores, online, in friend’s closets.  Each time I would find a shoe I liked, I realized that the heel height didn’t work.  Some heels were only 2.5 inches while some platforms were more than 4 inches.  I didn’t want my dress to drag on the ground, nor did I want my shoes to be awkwardly sticking out.  So, I kept on searching for the 3.5 inch shoe.

The process ended up taking me more than 2 months.  Of course, I didn’t search every weekend, but I kept my eye out for a shoe that I liked.  One other problem was that many shoes were not comfortable.  Finding comfortable bridal shoes was like finding a needle in a haystack.  Many were cute, but the higher heels put more pressure on my feet and I wanted to make sure my feet weren’t damaged by the end of the night.  This made my search even more difficult.

I finally found a pair that were comfortable and looked good on my feet.  The biggest thing I learned was that you should definitely look for your shoes earlier.  Right after you purchase that dress, start looking for shoes.  That way, you aren’t tied to an exact heel height since you can alter your dress to fit the shoes.  If I could go back and change anything, it would have been to find the bridal shoes earlier.  This would have saved me a lot of headaches and worrying during those months that I was trying to do all of my other wedding planning.

What to do after you’ve bought them

After you’ve chosen your wedding shoes, here are some things to do.

Break in your wedding shoes

Break in your wedding shoes

1. Make sure they are comfortable.  Try to wear them around to clean places where they won’t get dirty.  But, wear them to make sure you know they are comfortable.

2.  Wear them around the house for at least 2 hours so you know your feet won’t hurt.

3.  Look for padding to add to the shoe so your feet will be cushioned.

4.  Look at your shoes to see if you need to schedule an appointment to get your nails done or to get your feet scrubbed.  You want your feet to look good in your shoes so make sure you know what shows.

5.  Buy foot cream to beautify your feet.

6.  Make sure the height of the shoes matches your dress.  Be sure to check this out, otherwise, your dress may drag on the floor or be too tall.

7.  Store them in a place and wrap them up so they won’t get dusty.  You don’t want to pull them out on our big day and realize that they are dirty or need to be cleaned.

8.  Check that they match your dress, otherwise, go and exchange them for different ones.

Wedding shoes are a very important part of your day.  Prepare them early so you are ready.

What color should you buy?

When thinking about what color to buy, here are a few tips to help you choose:

1.  Choose your favorite color – always a good choice since you love it.

2.  Choose the color that matches your wedding – this is so cute!

3.  Choose the color that matches your bouquet – this is fun, especially if your bouquet is really unique.

4.  Choose the color that matches your bridesmaid dresses.  This will be great in pictures and really help your shoes stand out.

5.  Choose a color you will wear again and again, this way, your shoes won’t go to waist and you won’t have to throw them out or keep them in your closet after the wedding.

6.  Choose blue so you can use them as your something blue for your wedding.

7.  Choose red if you are bold and daring and want to make a statment.

8.  Choose silver or gold, but make sure the color matches the rhinestones and items on your dress.

9.  Choose pink wedding shoes or some other pastel color if you are going for a soft look for your wedding.

10.  Have fun!  This is your wedding and you can choose whatever you want.  You don’t need to stick with the usual colors of white or ivory.  Think through other fun colors and add them to your outfit.

Buying ivory bridal shoes

Posted by: weddingshoetips on: June 23, 2009

Finding ivory bridal shoes is hard.  Here are some tips for finding the perfect shoes for your wedding.

1.  Start early – as I mentioned before, start early.  Don’t wait until the last minute to shop.  New shoes come out every season so keep your eye out.

2.  Know the shade of ivory – ivory comes in lots of colors and shades.  Know the shade you are looking for.

3.  Look at designer shoes -  Some designers will make great shoes and their shades of ivory are more subtle.  The shades are closer to white, but they are gorgeous.

4.  Look in bridal salons – Shop in the bridal salons.  A lot of the bridal salons will carry some great shoes, especially ivory wedding shoes.  When you are shopping for your dress, ask them for shoes that could match.  It could be easier to buy shoes while you have your dress on so you can see what looks good.

5.  Search for other terms – When you search for ivory bridal shoes, look for cream or beige as well.  The color ivory could be labeled differently than what you expect.  Look for other terms since different shoe stores and manufacturers will call them a different color even though that is a color you are looking for.
